Carpet Caring and Cleaning Guide
Keeping your carpet cleaned and maintained is a crucial part of extending its life. Regular carpet cleaning and upkeep helps to maintain your carpet’s colour and quality, so it continues to look like new. As one of the focal points to any house’s decor, a clean carpet is necessary for presenting a neat and put-together space.
It’s important to maintain a routine for vacuuming and spot-treating your carpet. This will extract much of the surface dirt and debris that reside in your carpet, ultimately helping to keep dust and allergens out of the air. When spills or pet accidents happen, take immediate action in order to prevent staining and bad odors.
In conjunction with your regular carpet maintenance, calling on a professional’s carpet cleaning service — at least once or twice a year — is important for a deep clean. A carpet-cleaning professional can provide more extensive stain treatment and reach allergens and bacteria embedded in the fibres of your carpet that your vacuum may be missing. By hiring a cleaning service, you can keep your carpet in great shape for longer.
The most important thing is to vacuum your carpet regularly to remove the soil and dirt. When particles of dry soil move down into the pile, they are more difficult to remove and can scratch the fibers leading to premature wear of the carpet. High-traffic areas might need to be vacuumed more often. It’s a good idea to vacuum in different directions to help prevent matting. Vacuums with a beater/brush bar are recommended to agitate the carpet pile and loosen soil for removal. Note that some carpets such as those with thick loop pile construction can be sensitive to the use of a beater bar and might become fuzzy. For these products, use a suction-only vacuum or a vacuum with an adjustable brush lifted away from the carpet so it does not agitate the pile.
Spills…Don’t Panic but act fast
The following is a useful procedure for spills. First, quickly blot up excess liquid with a towel. Be sure not to rub! For water-based spills, use a mild, bleach-free detergent diluted with water. Apply using a clean cloth, and always work from the edge of the spot to the center. Rinse the area with water mixed with a small amount of white vinegar. Blot and allow to dry completely. A hair-dryer on medium setting will speed drying. Spills that are oil-based are a little more difficult to deal with and may require a solvent based cleaning agent. We recommend you contact a professional rug cleaner immediately.

Most of today’s carpet is treated with special finishes to resist soil and stains. However, no carpet is entirely stain-proof. Stain-resistant finishes hold the spill on the fibers surface, giving you some time to absorb the liquid using the correct spot removal technique. It is important to act quickly before the spill has a chance to penetrate the fibers. The longer you leave the spill unattended, the more difficult it will be to remove.
