Two of these four acronyms describe a shape and two describe a construction. LVP and LVT are plank-shaped and tile-shaped luxury vinyl. SPC and WPC are the rigid cores that can sit inside either of them. That single distinction resolves most of the confusion in a showroom.

SPC: The Practical Mainstream
SPC is the most popular rigid-core vinyl construction in current Ontario residential applications. The core is a composite of limestone powder and polymer materials, producing a rigid, dimensionally stable, dense product typically 5 to 7 mm thick. The rigidity bridges minor substrate variations gracefully, the dimensional stability handles temperature and humidity variations well, and the dense composite resists indentation from heavy furniture and appliances.
Within SPC, products vary by core thickness, wear layer thickness, integrated underlayment, and surface finish. Premium SPC products combine 6 to 7 mm cores with 20-mil or 30-mil wear layers and integrated underlayment with vapour barrier function. These products perform well in nearly any residential application and represent the practical mainstream for modern vinyl plank installations.
WPC, the Softer Core, and Where Flexible Vinyl Still Fits
WPC uses a wood flour and polymer composite core similar to SPC in concept but with slightly different characteristics. The wood-based core is generally slightly thicker (6 to 8 mm), slightly softer underfoot than SPC, and provides somewhat better acoustic dampening. The trade-off is slightly less indentation resistance than SPC and slightly higher cost for equivalent quality.
WPC fits applications where the slightly softer feel and acoustic improvement matter. Bedrooms, home offices, and rooms where comfort underfoot is a priority sometimes warrant WPC over SPC. For most applications, the differences are subtle enough that SPC is usually the practical choice; for specific situations where the WPC advantages matter, the premium is worth it.
The flexible constructions are cheapest and the limitations are real. They show minor substrate imperfections more readily than rigid-core alternatives, they are more vulnerable to dimensional change from temperature and humidity, and they typically carry shorter warranties. They also need a flat substrate, because a 2 mm product bridges nothing.
That leaves them a genuine but narrow place: budget-constrained projects, light-use rooms, and flat subfloors. For anything busier, or over a substrate that is not already flat, the modest premium for a rigid core is the easiest money in the category to justify.
What Actually Drives Durability
Wear layer thickness drives more of the durability difference than the core construction does. Flexible LVP and LVT with 6-mil wear layers are the least durable and suit light residential use. SPC at 12 mil covers moderate use. SPC and WPC at 20 to 30 mil cover heavy residential and light commercial use. Two products with identical cores and different wear layers are not comparable floors.
Indentation resistance is where the cores themselves diverge. SPC’s dense mineral core takes point loads from heavy appliances and furniture legs better than WPC’s wood composite or a flexible product.
