Windows are the weakest insulation point in nearly every Ontario home. Even high-performance triple pane sits around R-5 to R-7 while the wall it is set into is R-20 or better. How Cellular Shades Actually Do It

The honeycomb holds pockets of air between the room side of the fabric and the window side. Air insulates far better than glass, and those trapped cells slow the conduction. Double-cell stacks two layers and multiplies it. The structure damps sound as a side effect, which is why cellular shades are also the quietest coverings on a busy street.

All of that depends on the shade being fully down and the edges being sealed. Without side tracks, air simply moves around the sides of the shade and bypasses the cells entirely, and a good deal of the performance you paid for goes with it.   • West-facing — the summer problem. Late-afternoon sun on a west elevation is the single largest cooling load most houses have.
  • Old glass — single pane, or early double pane with tired seals. The worse the window, the more a covering is doing.
  • Bedrooms — where being cold at four in the morning is the difference between a room you use and a room you avoid.
  • Tall narrow windows — more edge per square foot of glass, and the edge is where seals fail.
