Laminate Flooring Thickness Guide: 7mm vs 8mm vs 10mm vs 12mm

Laminate plank thickness affects how the floor feels, sounds, and performs.

Two laminates with the same AC rating can feel very different underfoot if one is 7mm and the other is 12mm. Knowing which thickness suits which application helps you make a more informed choice—and avoid paying for thickness you do not need or skipping thickness you do.

The Short Answer

8 mm at AC3 or AC4 is the right specification for most of a house, and 10 mm is worth the step up in a kitchen, a condo, or anywhere the floor sits above a room somebody sleeps in. 7 mm belongs in quiet bedrooms on a tight budget. 12 mm is a genuine premium product, and it earns its price in specific situations only.

The important caveat comes first, because it is the thing most often got wrong on a showroom floor: thickness is not durability. Two planks of identical thickness can be two AC classes apart, and it is the AC class that decides how long the surface lasts. Thickness decides how the floor feels and sounds. Both matter, but they are not the same purchase, and if the budget forces a choice between them, buy the rating. The laminate pillar sets both specifications in context.

What Thickness Actually Changes

Three things change as a plank gets thicker, and none of them is wear resistance. The first is rigidity: a thicker plank flexes less underfoot, so the floor reads as solid instead of laid on. The second is sound — more material between your foot and the subfloor means less noise transmitted through it, both into the room and into the room below. The third is tolerance for an imperfect substrate: a thicker plank bridges minor unevenness slightly better than a thin one, though this is a marginal benefit and not a substitute for levelling a floor properly.

What thickness does not change is abrasion resistance, which lives entirely in the wear layer at the top. A 12 mm plank with a low AC rating will show traffic before an 8 mm plank with a high one, and it will feel lovely while doing it.

Why 8 mm Is the Default

8 mm is the most common residential laminate thickness in Ontario and it deserves to be. The jump from 7 mm to 8 mm is the largest single improvement in feel anywhere on the scale — larger, in practice, than the jump from 10 mm to 12 mm — and it happens at the point where the cost premium is smallest. It is available across the full AC2 to AC5 range, so it does not constrain the rating decision, and AC3 to AC4 at 8 mm covers living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and bedrooms without compromise. For a household putting one product through most of the house, this is the specification to start from and deviate from deliberately.

Where 10 mm and 12 mm Earn Their Premium

10 mm is the point where laminate stops sounding like laminate. It also tends to arrive with the features that make a floor convincing — thicker wear layers, embossed-in-register texture that aligns the surface grain with the printed grain, AC4 or AC5 ratings as standard. In a kitchen, where the floor is underfoot for hours and the sound bounces off hard surfaces, it is the thickness we recommend most often.

12 mm is the thickest residential laminate in common use and feels comparable to engineered hardwood underfoot. It carries the best dimensional stability and the best sound dampening, almost always comes AC5-rated, and frequently pairs with a waterproof core. It is a real product, not a badge — but it is a premium price for a difference most people notice in the first week and stop noticing after that. The exception is a condo with a written sound requirement, where the specification is not about preference.

How Thickness and AC Rating Interact

The two specifications are independent in principle and correlated in practice, because manufacturers reserve their premium features for their thicker products. Most 7 mm laminate is AC2 or AC3; most 8 mm is AC3 or AC4; most 10 mm is AC4 or AC5; most 12 mm is AC5 or higher. That correlation is a marketing decision with no physics behind it, and it has one practical consequence: if you want a high AC rating at a modest thickness, it exists, but you will have to ask for it, because it will not be on the display.

Matching Thickness to the Room

  • Bedrooms and formal living rooms — 7 mm or 8 mm.
  • Living and dining rooms — 8 mm minimum.
  • Kitchens — 10 mm minimum, where solid feel and sound both matter.
  • Hallways and mudrooms — 8 mm minimum, 10 mm preferred.
  • Condos — 10 mm or 12 mm with an acoustic underlay, and check the board’s rules first.
  • Stairs — 10 mm or 12 mm, where the feel underfoot is most exposed.

Thickness is the one laminate specification you cannot judge from a photograph or a sample chip. Book an in-store appointment and walk on a 7 mm and a 10 mm in the same visual — the difference is obvious in about four steps.

Sound, and Why Thin Laminate Reads Hollow

The complaint we hear about laminate more than any other is the sound. 7 mm and 8 mm planks can produce a hollow, slightly plastic note underfoot, particularly over a hard substrate and particularly with a cheap underlay. It is not a defect and it does not affect performance, but it is the thing that makes a floor read as laminate to a visitor who could not otherwise tell.

10 mm and 12 mm produce a more solid, muted note much closer to real hardwood. Where this matters most is predictable: condo units with downstairs neighbours, second-storey bedrooms over a living room, and households with young children asleep at eight o’clock. In those cases thickness and acoustic underlay work together and neither one alone gets you there.

What Underlayment Does That Thickness Cannot

Good underlayment improves the feel and the sound of every thickness, and it is cheaper per square foot than stepping up a tier. Even 12 mm benefits from acoustic underlay in a condo or a second-storey room. Some thicker products arrive with underlay already attached, which is convenient and also means you cannot upgrade it later.

The one hard rule is to confirm that the underlayment matches what the manufacturer specifies, because substituting it is one of the most common ways a warranty quietly stops applying. Laminate Underlayment covers foam, cork, rubber and felt and which one belongs under which floor.

Where the Money Is Best Spent

Our honest position is that thickness is the specification homeowners over-buy most often. Within one brand and one AC rating, moving from 7 mm to 12 mm can shift the product price by 30 to 80 percent — a bigger swing than moving up two AC classes, and it buys feel rather than life. If the budget is fixed, an 8 mm AC4 will outlast a 10 mm AC3 in a busy room, and it will cost less.

The exceptions are real and there are three of them: a condo with sound rules, a kitchen you stand in every day, and stairs, where thin laminate is most obvious underfoot. Everywhere else, specify 8 mm at the right rating, put the difference into a better underlay, and spend nothing on millimetres you will not feel.
