Carpet Fibre Comparison: Nylon vs Polyester vs Wool vs Olefin

Most of the difference between two carpets standing side by side in a showroom comes down to fibre.

The fibre decides how a carpet feels underfoot, how many years it gives you, how it responds to cleaning, and how it looks at the end of them. Two carpets with the same look, the same colour and the same price can perform very differently over ten years if one is nylon and the other polyester — or polyester and olefin.

This guide takes each major residential carpet fibre in turn, compares all four on the specifications that decide performance, and sets out where each one belongs.

The Short Answer

For anywhere the carpet gets walked on hard, solution-dyed nylon is the most reliable choice — stairs, hallways, main-floor rooms, a family room in constant use. Colour is locked into the fibre during manufacturing, so even bleach-based cleaners will not lift it, and it recovers from compression better than anything else in the residential range.

Polyester is the better buy in a bedroom or a formal room. It is the softest of the mainstream synthetics and the colour saturation is the richest, and in a room that sees light traffic its weaker resistance to compression never gets tested. Paying nylon money for a guest bedroom is a common way to spend more and get less.

Wool is the long-term buy for a household that intends to keep the carpet: it lasts 20 to 50 years with proper care, softens with age where synthetics break down, and dampens sound better than any synthetic. It costs more than premium nylon and it sheds for the first few months.

Olefin is the basement and budget answer. It does not absorb water-based liquids at all, and it turns up in most mid-range Berber loop carpet. It also compresses faster than nylon under traffic, and that keeps it out of hallways.

Why Fibre Type Is the Most Important Carpet Decision

Pile style, colour and pattern all affect how a carpet looks. Fibre affects how it lives.

A premium polyester will outperform a low-end nylon in some conditions. A solution-dyed nylon will outperform a regular nylon on stain resistance. Wool ages differently from any synthetic. Choosing the fibre first, then matching pile style and density to it, produces the most reliable results. Doing it the other way round — picking a look and accepting whatever fibre it happens to come in — is how a carpet ends up in a room it was never built for.

Nylon Carpet: The Most Versatile Option

Nylon is the most common premium carpet fibre. It resists wear, recovers from compression, and handles cleaning chemicals well.

Recovery is the property worth understanding, because it separates nylon from every other synthetic in a room that gets used. All carpet fibres compress under a footstep. Nylon stands back up. That is why a nylon carpet in a hallway still reads as carpet after eight years while a softer fibre in the same hallway has developed a visible lane.

Solution-dyed nylon, where colour is added during fibre production, is the most stain-resistant version. Almost any spill releases when blotted, and bleach-based cleaners can be used without affecting the colour. Standard acid-dyed nylon costs less and is somewhat more vulnerable to stains, particularly acidic spills like wine, juice or coffee — which is the trade that decides most nylon purchases.

Nylon works in nearly every room of the home and is the most reliable choice for stairs, hallways and high-traffic areas.

Polyester Carpet: Soft, Vivid, and Stain-Resistant

Polyester is exceptionally soft underfoot and offers the most vivid colour saturation of the common synthetic fibres.

Most polyester is inherently stain-resistant. The fibre itself does not absorb most liquids, so spills sit on the surface long enough to be cleaned up. That resistance belongs to the material itself. It does not wear off the way an applied treatment does. PET recycled polyester is widely available and increasingly common in mid-range carpet.

The trade-off is durability. Polyester compresses faster than nylon and shows traffic patterns sooner in busy areas. In bedrooms, formal living rooms and lower-traffic spaces, polyester offers excellent value — it is genuinely the better material for those rooms, not a compromise. In hallways, on stairs and in main-floor spaces under heavy use, nylon performs better long-term.

Wool Carpet: Natural and Long-Lasting

Wool is the longest-lasting natural fibre, and it has properties no synthetic can match: natural fire resistance, exceptional sound dampening, natural stain resistance from its lanolin coating, and the ability to soften with age where a synthetic breaks down.

That last property deserves a moment. Every synthetic carpet is at its best on the day it is installed and declines from there. Wool changes where a synthetic simply degrades. A wool carpet can still be the nicest floor in a house after twenty years while a synthetic of the same age is simply old. Most wool carpets last 20 to 50 years with proper care.

The honest costs are two. Wool is more expensive than premium synthetics. And there is an initial shedding period, usually 3 to 6 months, as loose fibres release — normal, self-resolving, and still a surprise to anyone who has not been told about it in advance.

Wool is best in homes where the natural look, feel and longevity matter more than the lower cost of synthetics. It is a poor fit for an Ontario basement, where it absorbs humidity from the air, and a difficult fit in a household with pets prone to accidents.

Olefin (Polypropylene) Carpet: Affordable and Stain-Resistant

Olefin is a synthetic fibre with strong inherent stain and moisture resistance. It does not absorb water, holds up to most cleaning agents, and is often the most affordable mainstream option.

Its resistance is a property of the fibre itself, not an applied treatment, leaving it close to immune to water-based spills — water, juice, soda. Oil-based stains are the exception, and a real one: olefin can absorb oils and hold them. The fibre that shrugs off a glass of wine will keep a grease mark.

It compresses more easily than nylon under traffic — a poor choice for hallways, stairs and busy main-floor rooms. It performs well in basements, lower-traffic family rooms and outdoor-style applications. Most Berber-style loop carpets in mid-range pricing use olefin fibre.

Nylon or Polyester: How to Settle It

Most carpet buyers end up here, and the table above settles it only if you already know which column matters to you.

The useful way to settle it is to stop comparing the two fibres and start describing the room. Ask how many times a day someone crosses that floor. If the true answer is dozens — a hallway, a family room, the route from the back door to the kitchen — the compression resistance nylon offers is the property being bought, and polyester’s extra softness is being bought at the cost of the thing that matters. If the answer is a handful of times, mostly barefoot, the traffic durability of nylon is a specification nobody in that room will ever test, and the softness earns its place.

Two further points settle most of the remaining cases. Solution-dyed construction matters more than the fibre name where spills are likely, and it is available in both nylon and polyester. A solution-dyed polyester can beat a standard acid-dyed nylon for a household with young children. And the money saved by choosing polyester over nylon is better spent on a denser underpad than on a higher pile height, because pad stops any fibre compressing against the subfloor.

Where we watch people get this wrong, it is nearly always the same misjudgement, and it is not about softness or stain resistance — those get weighed carefully in the showroom. It is about traffic. Polyester crushes down quicker than nylon, and in a hallway, a family room, or the run from the back door to the kitchen, that shows up as matting years before the carpet is worn out in any other sense. Almost nobody misjudges a bedroom. What gets misjudged is the route through the house.
