Wide planks showcase grain in a way narrow boards cannot. Narrow planks do the opposite: they read as texture rather than as pattern, and in a smaller room that restraint is usually the better call.

Species and width interact on price as well as on looks. Wide costs more for a straightforward reason. Why Width Behaves Differently in an Ontario Winter

Wider planks expand and contract more with humidity than narrower ones, for the simple reason that there is more wood per board to react. Most modern wide-plank installations use engineered rather than solid, and the reasoning stacks: wide visual impact, dimensional stability under humidity, and usually a lower price for the same width. Direction and Layout Change What Width Does

Wide planks emphasise floor direction more than narrow planks do, so the run matters more once you go wide. Running parallel to the longest wall makes a room feel longer and more expansive. Running perpendicular makes it feel wider but shorter. Diagonal and herringbone layouts add real visual interest in wide planks and tip into busy in narrow ones, which is worth knowing before you commit to a pattern on a sample the size of a placemat.
