For most Ontario homes, an AC3 laminate at 8 to 10 mm is the right specification for the majority of rooms — living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways, anywhere dry and above grade. Laminate’s limits deserve as much space as its strengths. It does not belong in a basement with active moisture concerns, in a bathroom with persistent humidity, or in any below-grade room where moisture management is not reliable. Two specifications carry most of the decision: the AC rating, which tells you how the wear surface will hold up, and whether the core is water-resistant or genuinely waterproof, which tells you which rooms are open to you. How Laminate Is Built, and How That Differs From Vinyl Plank

Laminate and vinyl plank get discussed together because they both produce wood-look floating floors at moderate cost, and because a homeowner standing in front of two displays often cannot tell which is which. Underneath, they are not related products at all, and the difference in construction is what drives every practical difference between them.

The Four Layers

Modern laminate is a stack of four things. The bottom is a melamine backing that provides moisture resistance and dimensional stability. The core is high-density fibreboard — compressed wood fibres with a resin binder — typically 6 to 12 mm thick, and it is the layer that makes laminate laminate. Above the core sits a decorative paper carrying the printed wood pattern. On top is a clear melamine resin wear layer reinforced with aluminum oxide particles, which is where the scratch resistance comes from.

Vinyl plank shares none of that. It is fully synthetic: a vinyl-based core — rigid SPC, WPC, or flexible LVP — with a printed surface and a clear wear layer over it. No wood, no fibreboard, nothing in the construction that responds to water the way a wood-fibre core does.

Why the Core Decides Everything

That HDF core is simultaneously the reason laminate is harder underfoot than vinyl, better at resisting surface scratches and dents, and more vulnerable to moisture than anything else in the wood-look category. When water reaches untreated fibreboard, the core swells and delaminates, and there is no repairing it — the plank comes out. Water-resistant and waterproof laminate products address this with sealed cores and treated edges, but the underlying material is still wood fibre, and that is the honest frame for every room decision that follows.

The scale runs from AC1, which is light residential, to AC6, which is extreme commercial. AC3 is the residential standard and is appropriate for general household use. Water Resistance vs Waterproof Laminate

Standard laminate is water-resistant but not waterproof. It tolerates light surface moisture cleaned up promptly. It does not tolerate standing water or persistent exposure. Modern water-resistant products have improved that tolerance through better edge sealing and treated cores, handling conditions that older laminate could not. Laminate runs from 7 mm at the entry level to 12 mm and beyond at the premium end. Thickness affects three things: how solid the floor feels underfoot, how much it dampens sound, and how much material sits in the click-lock joint, which governs long-term seam stability.

How Laminate Installs, and What Goes Underneath

Laminate installs as a click-lock floating floor. Planks connect to each other through tongue-and-groove edges with a mechanical lock, and the assembled floor floats over the substrate with no adhesive holding it down. That is why the perimeter expansion gap is not optional: the whole floor has to be free to change dimension seasonally, and a floor that is pinned at the walls will buckle in July.

Underneath sits underlayment, doing three jobs at once — acoustic dampening, moisture protection, and minor smoothing of the substrate. How Long Laminate Lasts, and Why It Usually Gets Replaced

Modern laminate lasts 10 to 20 years in residential use, with the upper end achievable for AC4 and higher products in moderate traffic. Entry-level AC1 and AC2 products in heavy-use rooms can need replacing at 8 to 10 years. Premium AC5 in light to moderate use can reach 20 to 25.

The more useful observation is why laminate floors come out.   • Buying on price alone — two planks at the same price can be two AC classes apart, and the display does not tell you.
  • Under-rating the room — AC3 in a busy kitchen or main hallway is the most common version of this.
